Permanence – establishing a sense of family and place
This new single family residence creates a building that blends with the historic fabric of the area without compromising a modern lifestyle. The design is inspired by the historic Huguenot stone buildings that permeate the Hudson Valley landscape. The stone exterior, a combination of Shawangunk conglomerate, bluestone, and granite, gives it the gravitas required of a 100-year-old farmhouse. The interior of the home gives way to a more modern aesthetic, balancing the experience of old and new.
The house features a one-story living wing with an open floor plan, and a two-story bedroom wing. This parti helps define the sections of the house, separating the public living spaces from the private sleeping areas. To further sunder the space, light pouring in through the tall window onto the curving stairway emphasizes the threshold of public and private. Glimpses of the new orchards are seen to the east, while the west captures sweeping views of the river and mountains beyond.
