BDS was engaged to redesign the interior of the Irvington Fire House after water damage during a roof replacement. The client wanted to re-imagine the space as more open, integrating the member lounge into the main hall. The challenge was doing it without adding significant cost above their insurance claim.

We designed two versions and bid them as base and alternate. In the open-plan version, removing the wall paneling in the storage and lounge areas, the unused storage closets, and the built-in bar paid for a compact two-sided island, a private kitchenette on one side and a buffet for public functions on the other. We also reorganized the kitchen for better flow to the main hall. The two prices came in within 0.6% of each other, allowing the department to move ahead with the open-plan option.
